CALLIGRAPHY

Classes Suspended

The calligraphy group meets on Thursday mornings in the C3A office.  We are a small friendly group and we would love to welcome new members.  Please do not be put off by the fact that we are a ‘self-help’ group – our former tutor, John Ward, now retired, instructed us well, and left us with a wealth of guidance and information which we pass on to those interested in ‘having a go’ at what has been called by some ‘the art of beautiful writing’ and by others ‘lettering for fun’.  John still comes occasionally if we send him a special request.  We don’t do this often as he has to come from Bolton, but his input is always inspiring.  A recent recruit to the group is already producing interesting pieces of work and enjoying the sessions.  The aim is not perfection but enjoyment, relaxation and creativity – at your own pace.  Why not come along and give it a try?  You will be very welcome!

Our Calligraphy group continues to follow the guidelines laid down by John Ward who was our tutor for many years - and still comes, on request, to advise us.

We have been revising and practicing the different scripts we have covered, including Gothic, Foundational Roundhand, Italic (Normal and Sharpened), Uncial, Legend and Lombardic, and applying these to our own varied projects, and we continue to share ideas, information and skills.

We are a small friendly group, and would welcome new members who would like to 'have a go'.  You don't need to have had any previous experience at all, so why not give it a try?  You might be surprised!  November 2017
